VISAKHAPATNAM: Call it the heights of unemployment, if you will but officials at the Eastern Power Distribution Company of AP Limited (APEPDCL) were in for a shock of their lives when they found that the 338 candidates that applied for the sole watchman’s post for its Visakhapatnam circle office at Ram Nagar had MBA and BTech grads among them.
Though, there is no basic educational qualification for the watchman’s post, which has a salary of Rs 25,000 per month, and the basic criteria is that the candidate should just know how to read and write in Telugu and should be not more than 35 years of age, most of those who applied were BSc, BCom, BBM, with some even holding BTech and MBA degrees.
Confirming this to TOI, EPDCL superintending engineering for Visakhapatnam circle office, M Satyanarayana Murthy, said “We were surprised to see many well-qualified candidates applying for the watchman’s post for our office. The selection only involves a running test.”
The discom shortlisted 317 candidates and sent them hall tickets, of which 148 candidates attended the running test and 35 were selected. In the running test, which was held on the BRTS road from Hanumanthawaka Junction towards Simhachalam on Friday, the candidates had to run 2.5 km within 13 minutes.
According to sources at the EPDCL corporate office, nearly 2,000 candidates applied for the six watchman posts for the discom’s five circle offices at Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, East Godavari and West Godavari, as well as the corporate office at Seethammadhara.
